Basketball Interest Meeting. The boys basketball program will hold an Interest Meeting on Tuesday, September 5, from 3:10-3:30pm in the Main Gym. The meeting will discuss try-out requirements and our Fall pre-season program. If a player cannot stay for the meeting, please come by the gym and sign in and pick up the hand-out before leaving school. In order to take part in our pre-season program, you will need to have a Virginia High School League (VHSL) physical on file for the school year and have completed the Activities Registration. Eligibility Questionnaire - Winter Eligibility Survey
Evaluations. Players will be rated on their offensive skills (shooting, ball handling & decision making), individual and team defensive skills, rebounding, athleticism, effort, and coachability/academics.
Schedule. Try-outs will be held from Nov. 7 until Nov. 11. All players will be guaranteed three days of try-outs, unless they skip a day or do not have their paperwork complete. Team selection will begin Wednesday, Nov. 9 and will be generally completed by Friday, Nov. 11. Players will receive an individual meeting with their coach at the end of try-outs. Expect that team sizes will likely be 12-13 players per team. If a player will miss any of those days, let Coach Roller know as soon as possible. If a player is still competing in a fall sport the week of try-outs, please also contact Coach Roller.

October 28 Update
We are now just 10 days away from try-outs! Schedule for the week of Oct 31 - Nov 5:
Try-Out Meeting. We will hold a try-out meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in the Main Gym beginning at 3:10pm. The meeting should be over by 3:30pm. The meeting will cover try-out requirements, schedule for the week, team formation, and several other items. If a player cannot make the meeting, I'd recommend that they come by the gym quickly and grab the handout and sign in. The handout will also be posted here. In preparation for try-outs, players should also complete Winter Sports Eligibility Survey (link below). Everyone will need to complete by the end of the first day of try-outs.

Conditioning. Yesterday was our final Green Day workout. Next week, for those players interested, we will hold two 45-60 minute conditioning sessions on Tuesday following the Try-Out Meeting, beginning at 3:45, and again on Thursday, beginning at 3:20. As with everything we do, these are completely voluntary.

September 30 Update
With the rain of Hurricane Ian incoming, all our activities tomorrow have been moved to the Aux Gym. For those players available and interested, we will run a lower level Fr/Jv Green Day from 11:15-12:15 (that should allow interested Jv players time to get to SLHS for their fall league game) and a Varsity workout 12:15-1:15 before our Fall League game at 1:45.

September 25 Update
The Green Day schedule for this week is still tentative and will likely not be finalized until Monday. We only have access to the Aux gym during the week, so we will try to have two different groups/sessions.

I am sure many of the players have friends on the baseball team who may also be attending the workout.
Save the Date: We are planning to hold our Fall Dine-Out fundraiser at Social Burger on October 19. They have been supporters of the program for a number of years, so I hope everyone will be able to stop by between 4-8pm for dinner.

September 18 Update
Green Day schedule for this week. As always, workouts are weather dependent. If storms force Fall practices inside, out Green Days can be canceled with little warning or while they are in progress.

September 3 Update
If you were unable to attend last week's Interest Meeting, the handout can be downloaded using the link above. Below is the basketball schedule for the upcoming week. Reminder that everything we do in the pre-season is voluntary. Whether a player attends all or none of the options will have no impact on his making a Madison team other than helping him prepare for try-outs.
All players must have a completed VHSL physical turned into the Activities Office and have completed the Athletics registration in order to take part in our fall workouts.
Green Days. We will hold our first Green Day workouts of the year on Wednesday from 6:15-8pm in the Aux Gym, Thursday from 7:15-9pm in the Main Gym, and from 8:15-10am on Saturday. We will have very limited gym space after school this fall. As a result, the majority of our workouts will need to occur in the evening. Academics should always come before a basketball workout if a player is behind or has a test the next day that he needs to prepare for.
Please be aware that if weather forces outdoor sports inside for practice, the Green Day workout could be canceled with little notice or while it is going.
Conditioning. If players want to do more than just our Green Day workouts, I recommend they take part in the baseball conditioning program that will begin in the next couple of weeks. Once I have the schedule, I will post it here and begin including in the emails sent to the disro list.
Fall Team Camp. On Sat., Oct. 22, we will put two varsity teams and a Jv team, the latter for sophomores, into the Riverside HS Team Camp out in Sterling. It will be a mostly all-day event and each team should get in three games. While I have already heard from some players, I will begin focusing on who would like to participate in a couple of weeks. The cost to play will depend on the number of players that sign up.

- Student Vaccination procedures (please contact the Activities Office with any questions):
- Student-Athletics 16+ years trying out for a winter sport must provide proof of full vaccination or a religious / medical exemption to the Activities Office. Students with a medical or religious exemption will enter into weekly testing program.
- Student-Athletes 14-15 years old may provide proof of fully vaccinated or enter into weekly testing. If they have a religious / medical exemption, they will be in the testing protocol.
Tryouts
Tryouts will begin Mon., Nov 8th. Team selection will begin on Nov 10th and will be complete by Fri., Nov. 12. If a player is still competing in a Fall Madison sport, he should contact Coach Roller and arrangements will be made to try-out at the end of his season.
MASKS- Masks must be worn into the building. It is your family’s choice whether you want to keep the mask on while you play, but you do not have to.
WATER- Bring your own water bottle. There will be a refilling station, but we do not provide cups.

Season: If you make a team, it is a 6-day commitment. We will have practices over the holidays. JV/ Freshman will not have as many practices as varsity. Athletes who play other sports during the winter, please remember that basketball needs to be your priority. Coaches are willing to work with you, but it cannot be a weekly occurrence.

UPDATE Oct. 31. Schedule for this week: We are not allowed to run any skill workouts (Green Days) this week. The plan had been to hold one conditioning workout during the teacher workdays and then hold after school workouts on Wednesday and Thursday. However, due to gym space limitations, we cannot hold a workout on Wednesday after the try-out meeting so we will hold workouts Mon, Tue, & Thu this week. If you/your son cannot make one or more of of the workouts due to transportation challenges, that is not a problem - please just get in a good workout on your own. The workouts will be held in the Main Gym. If the weather is really nice and the football field is open, we may move it outside. I will make that decision Monday and Tuesday morning.- Mon., Nov. 1: 1:00-2:00pm, Conditioning workout in the Main Gym.

We have split the players into younger and older groups so that we can focus on different skills with each and to keep the numbers low enough that all the players get a meaningful number of reps during the workout. UPDATE Sept. 7. For those that were unable to attend our Interest Meeting after school today, please use the link below to access the meeting handout. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Roller at krroller@fcps.edu. For those players that are available and have completed both the VHSL physical form and Athletics Registration, we will hold a Green Day workout tomorrow after school from 3:15-4:45 in the Aux Gym. If you cannot attend, it is not a problem as we just scheduled it today once the gym space became available. The Green Day that had been planned for this Friday after school has been canceled due to changes in fall sports' practice schedules. Our goal is to have one or two workouts per week between now and the end of October. While we have a tentative schedule for September included in the attachment, these will often change week to week, as they did this week. The finalized workout schedule for each week will be posted on the website here the weekend before.

JMHS Basketball Team - 2020 Season Information:
Update Dec. 11
** We have swapped the planned Junior Varsity and Freshman practice times and locations for today. **
JV - 5:40-7:30, JMHS Small Gym. Please arrive at Door 12 at 5:20 for Check-in. Final team selection will be completed after the try-out, finishing by 8:30.
Freshman - 5:30-8:00 at Thoreau. Unlike earlier in the week, practice will be in Gym 2. Please arrive at Door 12 by 5:20 for check-in. Players will also depart through Door 12.

Update Dec. 6
Below are check-in and try-out procedures for Monday. If all goes smoothly, procedures for Tuesday should be similar. For everyone -- please arrive at the school masked with two water bottles. Upon arriving, players will come inside, complete the daily Covid questionnaire, and have their temperature taken. Anyone above 100.4 will need to go home for the day. For parents dropping players off at the school, please wait until check-in is complete before leaving. Once checked-in, players will use the hand sanitizer that is inside of each door at the school and head to the gym or lobby area depending on what time their try-out is. Players should remain masked until they enter the gym to begin try-outs. Once in the gym, they should put their bag and water bottles, towel, etc. along a side wall or bleacher at least 6-feet from anyone else's. If players need to use the restroom during the try-out, they should put their mask back on and go one at a time. Players are free to wear a mask during try-outs, but it is not required. When they are not actively involved on the floor in a drill or scrimmaging, players should either put their mask back on or keep themselves socially distanced on the sideline and when getting water. Monday's Schedule
Varsity: Try-out is from 5:10-7:20 in the Main Gym. Please arrive at Door 11 beginning at 4:40; this is 10mins earlier than what is in the try-out letter. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Roller. They will then have a chance to stretch on their own in the lobby with masks still on. The girls varsity try-out will end at approximately 5pm and when they have left the gym, the team will enter and begin at 5:10. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. At the end of practice at 7:20, the players will put face masks back on, depart out the back of the gym, and leave the school through Door 10 by the Wrestling and Chorus rooms, sanitizing their hands again as they leave. This way we limit any contact with the next group using the gym.
Junior Varsity: Try-out is from 7:30-9:30 in the Main Gym. Please arrive at Door 11 beginning at 7:00. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Smerdzinski. They will then have a chance to stretch on their own in the lobby with masks on. The varsity try-out will end at approximately 7:20, and once they have left the gym, the JV team will enter and begin their try-out at 7:30. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. As this is the last try-out of the day, when it ends at 9:30, the players will put face masks back on and depart back out Door 11, sanitizing their hands as they leave.
Freshman: Try-out is from 3:00-5:15 in the Small Gym at Madison. The ending time is earlier than what was on the try-out letter. Please arrive at Door 12 beginning at 2:30. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Buerkle. As the first team using the gym, players will be able to go directly into the gym to prepare for try-outs. They should remain masked until the try-out officially begins. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. At the end of the try-out at 5:15, the players will put face masks back on, walk down the main hallway, and depart out Door 1 by the main office in order to avoid the team coming in Door 12 for the next try-out. Players will sanitize their hands as they leave.
** Coach Buerkle has also asked that the players wear a white t-shirt with their name on it in Sharpie, preferably on both sides. We have tried name tags/stickers before, but they fall off, inevitably get stepped on, and then get quite stuck to the floor.

Update Nov. 15
I have received several questions regarding try-outs and winter break - please see the current status below, keeping in mind that everything can change.
Try-outs. Many of the details remain TBD and in flux, particularly as the country and state responds to the current pandemic surge. Once we have more finalized information, we will hold a virtual try-out meeting, but that may not occur until the first week of December. Currently, nothing has changed, and try-outs will begin on Monday, Dec. 7. Depending on the team, try-outs will run at least through Wednesday and possibly through the end of the week.
Winter Break Schedule. Reminder to everyone that we will have games and practices through the winter break. Currently, we have games scheduled for Mon., Dec. 21 and Wed., Dec. 23; and again the next week on Mon., Dec. 28 and Wed., Dec. 30. The freshman and Jv team will not practice on Dec. 24; the varsity team is TBD, but any practice would be in the morning. Since it is unlikely that we will be allowed to practice on Sun., Dec. 27, please plan on each team practicing in the afternoon/early evening of the 26th.
FCPS registration sysytem. If you have not yet completed the new Activites registration system, it is required in order to try out. You can register at
