JMHS Basketball Team - 2021 Season Information
UPDATE Sep. 21. Apologies that the update over the weekend does not look to have registered on the site. Schedule for this week:
Tues., Sep. 21 -- Green Day workout for the Lower Classmen (Fr & So) in the Aux Gym, 5:30-7:00. Reminder that players need to have completed both their Athletics Registration as well as submitted a completed VHSL physical to participate. Also, if weather forces fall sports inside, our workouts could be canceled with little or no warning or ended early.
Thu., Sep. 23 -- Green Day workout for the Upper Classmen (Jrs & Srs) in the Aux Gym, 5:30-7:00.
Sat., Sep. 25 -- Green Day workout for Upper Classmen, 8:30am-10:00am Main Gym.
Save the Date: we will be holding a Fall Dine-Out fundraiser at Social Burger on Tue., Oct. 6.
-------------- UPDATE Sept. 12. Schedule for the week: If you have not attended a workout yet this year and are not on Coach Roller's email list, please email him prior to attending to give us a chance to confirm that all paperwork is completed.
Tue., Sep 14. Underclassmen (Fr/So) Green Day 3:15-4:25 in the Main Gym. Upperclassmen (Jr/Sr) Green Day 4:25-5:45 in teh Main Gym. Reminder that you must have completed the Activities Registration process and submitted a VHSL physical in order to take part. We have split the players into younger and older groups so that we can focus on different skills with each and to keep the numbers low enough that all the players get a meaningful number of reps during the workout. Also, while no weather is expected early in the week, if anything forces fall sports inside, our workout could be canceled with little or no notice.
Fri., Sep 17. Underclassmen (Fr/So) Green Day 3:15-4:45 in the Aux Gym.
Sat., Sep 18. Upperclassmen Green Day 8:30-10:00am before Varsity Fall League.
UPDATE Sept. 7. For those that were unable to attend our Interest Meeting after school today, please use the link below to access the meeting handout. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Roller at firstname.lastname@example.org. For those players that are available and have completed both the VHSL physical form and Athletics Registration, we will hold a Green Day workout tomorrow after school from 3:15-4:45 in the Aux Gym. If you cannot attend, it is not a problem as we just scheduled it today once the gym space became available. The Green Day that had been planned for this Friday after school has been canceled due to changes in fall sports' practice schedules. Our goal is to have one or two workouts per week between now and the end of October. While we have a tentative schedule for September included in the attachment, these will often change week to week, as they did this week. The finalized workout schedule for each week will be posted on the website here the weekend before.
UPDATE Sept. 2. Our Basketball Interest Meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Main Gym from 3:10-3:30. We will cover try-out dates and requirements as well as pre-season basketball opportunities during the fall.
** Try-Outs begin Monday, Nov. 8 and will be completed by Friday, Nov. 12. We will hold an Interest Meeting the week after Labor Day - most likely Tuesday or Wednesday -- to discuss try-outs and our fall pre-season options.
** In order to try-out or take part in our pre-season program, players must submit a completed Virginia High School League (VHSL) physical and complete the Activities Office Registration system. Information on both can be found on the warhawksports.org home page - please look in the upper left-hand area.
** As you may have heard, all winter and spring sport athletes will now need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to take part. More information and details will be forthcoming from the County.
Most of your questions will be answered at the Interest Meeting next week. Once the day/time is finalized, it will be announced on the monitors around the school and I will post the information here.
Thank you - Coach Roller
JMHS Basketball Team - 2020 Season Information:
Update Dec. 11
** We have swapped the planned Junior Varsity and Freshman practice times and locations for today. **
JV - 5:40-7:30, JMHS Small Gym. Please arrive at Door 12 at 5:20 for Check-in. Final team selection will be completed after the try-out, finishing by 8:30.
Freshman - 5:30-8:00 at Thoreau. Unlike earlier in the week, practice will be in Gym 2. Please arrive at Door 12 by 5:20 for check-in. Players will also depart through Door 12.
Update Dec. 6
Below are check-in and try-out procedures for Monday. If all goes smoothly, procedures for Tuesday should be similar. For everyone -- please arrive at the school masked with two water bottles. Upon arriving, players will come inside, complete the daily Covid questionnaire, and have their temperature taken. Anyone above 100.4 will need to go home for the day. For parents dropping players off at the school, please wait until check-in is complete before leaving. Once checked-in, players will use the hand sanitizer that is inside of each door at the school and head to the gym or lobby area depending on what time their try-out is. Players should remain masked until they enter the gym to begin try-outs. Once in the gym, they should put their bag and water bottles, towel, etc. along a side wall or bleacher at least 6-feet from anyone else's. If players need to use the restroom during the try-out, they should put their mask back on and go one at a time. Players are free to wear a mask during try-outs, but it is not required. When they are not actively involved on the floor in a drill or scrimmaging, players should either put their mask back on or keep themselves socially distanced on the sideline and when getting water. Coaches and school personnel will be masked throughout the try-out. If, on any day, you are not feeling well - please stay home. If this occurs before you have had three days of try-outs, you will be provided an additional day or days.
Varsity: Try-out is from 5:10-7:20 in the Main Gym. Please arrive at Door 11 beginning at 4:40; this is 10mins earlier than what is in the try-out letter. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Roller. They will then have a chance to stretch on their own in the lobby with masks still on. The girls varsity try-out will end at approximately 5pm and when they have left the gym, the team will enter and begin at 5:10. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. At the end of practice at 7:20, the players will put face masks back on, depart out the back of the gym, and leave the school through Door 10 by the Wrestling and Chorus rooms, sanitizing their hands again as they leave. This way we limit any contact with the next group using the gym.
Junior Varsity: Try-out is from 7:30-9:30 in the Main Gym. Please arrive at Door 11 beginning at 7:00. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Smerdzinski. They will then have a chance to stretch on their own in the lobby with masks on. The varsity try-out will end at approximately 7:20, and once they have left the gym, the JV team will enter and begin their try-out at 7:30. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. As this is the last try-out of the day, when it ends at 9:30, the players will put face masks back on and depart back out Door 11, sanitizing their hands as they leave.
Freshman: Try-out is from 3:00-5:15 in the Small Gym at Madison. The ending time is earlier than what was on the try-out letter. Please arrive at Door 12 beginning at 2:30. Players will check-in and have a brief pre-tryout discussion with Coach Buerkle. As the first team using the gym, players will be able to go directly into the gym to prepare for try-outs. They should remain masked until the try-out officially begins. The water fountains at the school are turned off, so please ensure you bring sufficient water. At the end of the try-out at 5:15, the players will put face masks back on, walk down the main hallway, and depart out Door 1 by the main office in order to avoid the team coming in Door 12 for the next try-out. Players will sanitize their hands as they leave.
** Coach Buerkle has also asked that the players wear a white t-shirt with their name on it in Sharpie, preferably on both sides. We have tried name tags/stickers before, but they fall off, inevitably get stepped on, and then get quite stuck to the floor.
Try-out Meeting. We will hold a Zoom Try-out meeting on Tuesday at 7pm. If you are not on Coach Roller's email list, please email him at for additional details.
Activities Registration. If you have not yet completed the new Activities registration, please do do as soon as possible. You can register at https://jamesmadison-ar.rschooltoday.com/. Please direct any questions on the system to the Activities Office.
I have received several questions regarding try-outs and winter break - please see the current status below, keeping in mind that everything can change.
Try-outs. Many of the details remain TBD and in flux, particularly as the country and state responds to the current pandemic surge. Once we have more finalized information, we will hold a virtual try-out meeting, but that may not occur until the first week of December. Currently, nothing has changed, and try-outs will begin on Monday, Dec. 7. Depending on the team, try-outs will run at least through Wednesday and possibly through the end of the week.
Winter Break Schedule. Reminder to everyone that we will have games and practices through the winter break. Currently, we have games scheduled for Mon., Dec. 21 and Wed., Dec. 23; and again the next week on Mon., Dec. 28 and Wed., Dec. 30. The freshman and Jv team will not practice on Dec. 24; the varsity team is TBD, but any practice would be in the morning. Since it is unlikely that we will be allowed to practice on Sun., Dec. 27, please plan on each team practicing in the afternoon/early evening of the 26th.
FCPS registration sysytem. If you have not yet completed the new Activites registration system, it is required in order to try out. You can register at https://jamesmadison-ar.rschooltoday.com/. Please direct any quesitons on the system to the Activities Office.
Update November 7
-- If you are interested in trying out for a Madison basketball team in December, please go to the following link and complete the basketball interest form. I believe you may need to be signed into your fcpsschools.net email. You can also access the form through the JMHS Athletics Twitter feed on the Warhawksports home page.
-- Mr. Kenny, Director of Student Activities, will be holding a virtual Athletic Town Hall on Tuesday, November 10th at 6:30pm. Please attend if at all possible. The link will be made available on Monday or Tuesday - keep an eye out for it on Twitter @JMHSAthletics.
-------------------------------------------------- Update November 4
Please see below important information from Mr. Kenny , Director of Student Activities, regarding updates to the County "paperwork" in order to play as well as an upcoming Athletic Town Hall.
FCPS is moving to an online student registration system, including online submission of forms and concussion education. Please register using the link below and verify completion of concussion education ASAP.
Each family will create an account and from this account, can register their student(s) for various activity and athletic opportunities. While registering does not guarantee a spot on the team, this information will help to ensure your student is ready to go on the first day of tryouts. Students can be registered for one or more activities throughout the year and families can sign in as needed to update information.
Please note the following:
You will still need to submit a valid VHSL Pre-participation Exam Form (physical) directly to the school prior to your student’s participation via main office orJMHSPhysicals@fcps.edu; While you have the ability to enter the physical date, this will be confirmed by the activities office upon receipt of the actual form. All other requirements will be completed through this registration process.
Families who have already submitted their concussion education verification form will be asked to verify completion again as part of the registration process. We do apologize for any inconvenience- please bear with us as we make this change
With the state approval of the VHSL's return to sports plan last week, high school sports will begin December 7th. If you would like to see the powerpoint presented to boosters earlier this week, click here. There are lots of things TBD, such as whether we will have a district tournament (in the absence of which all teams would get a shot at regionals), fundraising, transportation, etc. There are myriad challenges this year and the Madison Activities Office is working hard to make sports happen for our kids. Stay tuned as the season gets closer.
Mr. Kenny is holding an Athletic Town Hall on Tuesday November 10th at 6:30pm. Please attend if you would like to learn more. The link will be made available before then - keep an eye out for it on Twitter @JMHSAthletics.

Update October 25, 2020:
Paperwork. Reminder that both for try-outs and when we begin fall workouts, all players must have submitted completed VHSL physicals and FCPS Concussion Ed certificates. Links for both can be found at www.warhawksports.org and completed forms should be emailed to .
Try-Outs. Basketball try-outs are still scheduled to begin on Monday, Dec. 7. As we get closer to actaully having a season (fingers crossed), we will have a try-out meeting in mid-November with additional details. Everyone is guaranteed three days of try-outs during that week. Expect teams to have rosters of 12 players.
Season. The basketball schedule has been released on the JMHS Twitter account. To see a complete list please check there. Here are the primary points for family planning. We will play four games over winter break - Mon., Dec. 21, Wed., Dec. 23, and again on Mon., Dec. 28 and Wed., Dec 30. No team will practice on the 24th, but each team will likely practice on Sat. the 26th, as I do not expect the VHSL will allow practices on Sunday teh 27th. We will then play two or three games each week of January to complete our 14-game regular season schedule. The schedule and playoffs in February are still being determined. Game and practice procedures to maximize safety are also still be discussed and finalized.
-- Fall Conditioning. There is no change at the moment as all workouts are still limited to outdoor conditioning. I am cautiously hopeful that we will be allowed to begin running indoor conditioning and skill workouts in early to mid-November. Even when that is approved, it will certainly also come with a range of restrictions. I will post additional information as I receive it.
If you have any additional questions, please email me at . Thank you and stay healthy.

Update October 3, 2020:
I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable weekend. Please find below the current information on our seaon and preseason. Please also understand that everything is subject to change.
Try-Outs. Under the current Virginia High School League (VHSL) plan, basketball try-outs will begin on Monday, Dec. 7. As we get closer to actaully having a season (fingers crossed), we will have a try-out meeting in mid-November with additional details. Everyone is guaranteed three days of try-outs during that week. Expect teams to have rosters of 12 players.
Season. If all goes well we will have a condensed season with approximately 14 regular season games between Dec. 21-Feb. 6 (most likely) and playoffs (TBD) for the varsity. I do not have any information regarding winter break, but in terms of family planning, I would expect that we would play during those two weeks in order to get in all 14 games.
Pre-Season Workouts. As many of you know, teams are currently only allowed to conduct workouts outside with limitations on what we can use in terms of sports equipment. We are currently not running any basketball workouts, but we plan to reassess again in a couple of weeks or if the County allows us to run workouts in the gym. With no outdoor basketball hoops or courts at the school, it is not possible to run our normal per-season Green Day skill workouts. For multisport athletes at Madison, if another sport is holding workouts, I recommend you take part.
Conditioning & Try-Out paperwork. In order to take part in try-outs or any pre-season program you must complete the following paperwork (forms & information can be found at www.warhawksports.org). Once you complete the forms, please email them to: .
VHSL Physical – you must use the VHSL form; do not simply use your doctor’s form.
FCPS Concussion Education – Both you and your parents must complete this program.
Interest Meeting. In mid-October, we will likely hold a virtual interest meeting. Please check back here for more details. However, unless there is new information from the State and/or County, most of the information will be the same as included here.
VHSL has scheduled all Winter Sports from December 14, 2020 to February 20, 2021. Please contact the coach directly for updates and future guidance. We will continue to post new information here as it becomes available.
Please contact Coach Roller to be added to the email distribution list.
